On Sunday, July 14, 2002, Old Timer fans and a large contingent of their pet dogs, large and small, gathered in the Merkur parking lot on Frauentorgasse in Tulln to see the start of the 21st Dopplerhuetten-Bergwertungsfahrt.

Under a blue sky and hot sun, the rally attracted participants in five categories of automobiles and motorcycles. The route followed highway LH120 to Tulbingerstrasse where it wound its way up and through the romantic Vienna Woods to Koenigstetten then turning off on to LH121 to Tulbinger Kogl over to L2012 to Katzelsdorf am Wienerwald over to L2135 to Nitzing and then on L2011 to complete the run to the finish line on Frauentorgasse in Tulln. The route included two bridges and a race course on the Langenbebarn airfield that had served as a race track in the 1950s and 1960s.

Automobiles in Class D ranged from a Ford A from 1928, a magnificent Austrian-made Steyr 30 from 1932, an Aston Martin LeMans from 1933, a Singer 9 Sports car from 1934 and a Czech Tatra 57A from 1935.

Automobiles in Class E included a MG TD MkII from 1953, a Jaguar XK 140 from 1957, and a Porsche 356 B Cabrio from 1960.  Tulln's Mayor Wilhelm Stift delighted the crowd with his fantastic red and white 1959 Cadillac Eldorado Biarritz convertible.

Class F included cars manufactured from 1961 to 1970 such as a Jaguar E-type and a Jaguar 240, an Austin Healey MkII,  MGBs, a very rare Alfa Romeo Giulia Veloce Spider, Triumph Spitfire MkIII, Steyr-Puch 700C as well as a 850 Sport Coupé, and a Austin Mini 850 MkIII.

Class G covered makes from the 1970s and later including Triumphs, Mercedes, Porsches, Toyota and Citroens as well as special attractions like a Mitsubishi Evolution from 2001, and a Porsche 911 Turbo from 1992.

In the motorcycle category, makes ranged from a BMW R71 from 1938, a NSU 2510 SL from 1943, Puch 150TL from 1952, Puch 250SGS from 1954, Puch 175SVS from 1954, a Victoria Aero Sport from 1954, Triumph Tiger 100 from 1955, Lohner L125 from 1955, KTM Grand Tourist from 1957, a Puch 175SV from 1965, and a BMW R75/5 from 1969. Two tricycles also participated: an Innsbruck-built Libelle from 1954 (only 40 were made) and a BMW Isetta from the late 1950s.

And the winners were:

Automobile Class D and E: Hermann Rampf in his 1957 Jaguar XK 140

Automobile Class F: Johann Fichtinger in his 1962 VW Kaefer Cabrio

Automobile Class G: Gottfried Kunz in his 1973 Porsche 914/2.0

Motorcycle Class: Mr. Habenwallner in his BMW Isetta (a 1950s three wheeler)

Johann Fichtinger also won the overall ranking with his 1962 VW Kaefer Cabrio. And Mayor Stift, who had to refuel his Cadillac Eldorado Biarritz convertible three times, surely won the highest fuel consumption per kilometer record this year.

Next year the Langenbebarn airfield event will also be open to the public. For more information see: www.dopplerhuette.at
