Duncan J. D. Smith (pictured) was born in Sheffield, England in 1960. His middle names reflect his northern English and Scottish ancestries respectively. From the age of 10 he has been an avid collector of all things historical and ran his own private museum (in his parents' cellar!) before going on to read Ancient History and Archaeology at Birmingham University in 1979. Together with his father Trevor, a retired teacher and librarian, he has co-written and illustrated five highly successful books on the history and curiosities of Sheffield, their hometown, and the English county of Yorkshire in which that city lies. Their total book sales to date are approaching the 30,000 mark in addition to which they have written numerous magazine articles and have given many illustrated lectures. Duncan J. D. Smith has spent most of his working life in the publishing business. In his spare time he is a keen traveller (especially around the Mediterranean), photographer, natural historian, gardener, book-collector and cook. His literary sojourn in the cultural capital of Vienna had inspired him to research, photograph and write his book Only in Vienna - A Guide to the Hidden Corners, Little-Known Places and Unusual Objects of the City on the Danube. The city has also prompted him to attempt painting, something he has wanted to try for many years, and to indulge his interest in the world of classical music. For reprints and usage permission of his articles he can be contacted through his website: www.duncanjdsmith.com
One way to see the sights of Vienna that does not involve using the busy Ringstrasse is to take a circular boat trip down the Danube Canal and up the Danube proper. The view may not be as grand, but the traveller will get to see a handful of unusual places missed by most. Read Article
