Christmas and Advent 2008 in Vienna

No sooner has November drawn a thick curtain of drizzle and fog across the heavens and the days become steadily shorter, then some places sink into a deep melancholy. But not Vienna. Here the weeks leading up to Christmas are romantic and idyllic. The city shimmers in a mild glow of candles while the sweet aromas of gingerbread, mulled wine and Christmas baking pervade the air. The streets and shops are festively decorated and Christmas markets enchant young and old alike. Year in, year out.   Read More

AN EXCURSION TO SLOVENIA AND ITALY - MONTE LUSSARI

By Susanne Pacher

After yesterday's exciting outing to Graz we were planning an even bigger outing today: an excursion to the so-called "Drei-Länderecke", an area where Austria, Italy and Slovenia come together. So we left early in the morning to drive from my home province of Styria along the A2 Highway to the Austrian province of Carinthia. The drive across the mountains of Western Styria is extremely scenic and the pleasant panoramas continued into the picturesque province of Carinthia ("Kärnten" in German)

RUSTER AUSBRUCH: THE SPECIALITY DESSERT WINE

By Emily Schindler

Ruster Ausbruch is a specialty sweet dessert wine from Austria. In understanding what Ruster Ausbruch is, it is helpful to first look at the name itself: Ruster is pronounced “rooster”, like the bird, and it simply means that the wine comes from the town of Rust (pronounced roost) in the Burgenland region of Austria. Ausbruch is pronounced ahs-brook, and comes from the German word Ausbrechen, which means to “break out.”

BAD MOODS ARE IN THE WIND

In many cultures, seasonal winds are referred to as ill winds. They have different names around the world and in Austria they are called foehns (pronounced halfway between "phone" and "foon".) The winds may bring a touch of spring, but it can also put people in a foul mood by giving them tension headaches, backaches, hot flashes, nausea and sleepless nights.

IRREVERENT SCRIBBLES - EXPAT ETIQUETTE
By Robin Pascoe

"Have we met before?" one expatriate woman asked another, a cocktail glass in her hand. "Only on about seventeen other occasions," answered the second women, trying hard not to throw the contents of her own glass in the woman's face. "Really?" said the first woman, nonplussed. "I can't seem to remember your name."

VIENNA PUBLIC LIBRARIES
Amber writes "

I love to read and although I have spent lots of money on books here I find the prices sometimes border along "daylight robbery".  However if you are like me and don't need to keep every book you buy and like to read something different then why not go along to your local librabry."
