Austria, Styria, Burgenland, and Vienna. Each of these regions is

A Guide to Hidden Corners, Little-Known Places and Unusual Objects
By Duncan J.D. Smith
Vienna is surely one of the grandest, and at the same time most
compact, capital cities in Europe. It is also one of the most
fascinating. The plethora of available tourist guidebooks offers the
undemanding visitor a fabulous (and effortlessly accessible) array of
museums, churches, palaces and eateries, reflecting the history of
the city from Roman times, via the Habsburg Empire, up to the present
day. However, for those with a little more time on their hands, and
for those who want to discover something of the place for themselves,
this new guide has been expressly written.

CAN'T FIND WORK OVERSEAS?

By Robin Pascoe
While living in foreign countries, expatriates are in chronic danger
of being isolated and too often feel 'disconnected. One
solution, writes Robin Pascoe, is for expats to use their time and
energy to help others. Ellen Wiesenfeld is no stranger to postings in
poverty-stricken countries. Her husband's UNICEF career has taken
them to the capitals of Burma, the Sudan, Laos, and for the past two
years, Bangladesh. Not exactly Club Med postings. But for some
reason, living in Dhaka has transformed her.

For those of you choosing to fully integrate your families in the
Austrian life and educate your children in German, or for the VIC
Austrian, Swiss or German families, please, allow me to introduce you
to a fine school (Gymnasium) in the Embassy quarter of the 4th District.
It is a private Austrian School that provides an excellent co-ed
education taught in the German language within a five day school
week. It is an Episcopal School with a large Catholic attendance and
provides religious studies in both these disciplines, however any and
all children are welcome at the school and the mix of students is
international.

WIENER NEUSTADT FOUNDED AS A FORTRESS

In 1194, Duke Leopold V of Austria and Styria, a member of the
Babenberg dynasty, founded "Nova Civitas", a "new
city" (now Wiener Neustadt) on the northern fringes of his
Dukedom of Styria, because the existing border fortress of Pitten was
no longer considered sufficient. The successors of the Babenbergers,
the Habsburgs, remained closely associated with Wiener Neustadt.
