Hello there!
We are coming to Vienna shortly and wondering if there is any chance we will be able to sample Austrian and Viennese foods being vegan. Any suggestions, ideas, restaurants, stores, etc?
Also, we are wondering about how the EU countries treat their meat and diary industry, I am assumeing more humanly than the US?
Thank you for any suggestions, comments, ideas: ))
I think it might be difficult and almost impossible in many places. Many things that sound like th could be veggie, let alone vegan-- aren't-- for example, a potato soup will often have a meat-based broth. Even "vegetarian" dishes will often have bacon in it-- it's laughed off as not counting as real meat.
A friend of mine came to visit and she is usually vegan. Vegetarian alone was enough of a challenge but she found it impossible to be vegan here (since she wasn't cooking at home for herself every day.)
Austrian food seems to involve lots of aimal products-- for example, even a meatless dish will have cheese, eggs, butter, etc.--so while you might be able to cook vegan for yourself and maybe find a vegan dish or two atplaces within the Ring of central Vienna-- don't expect to be vegan and eat traditional Austrian food.
Whether the EU treats it's animals better, I'd say it's not quite as lawless as the US, but there is PLENTY of room for improvement... It's no paradise.

Hi People,
Just happened to see this info today.
die BIO BAR von antun
Drahtgasse 3
1010 Wien
http://www.biobar.at
Never been there myself, but it looks good, and they would even seem to know the difference between vegetarian & vegan ;-)
BTW, thanks to everybody who posted the links to other vegetarian and vegan eateries/shops.

I spoke with a couple of food critics about this, both were of the opinion that hollerei and gesundes and koestlich are good, but no where amazing that they know of.
In saying that, when im out and about, i often see small independent funky little vegetarian places, im sure they could cater for vegans with a bit of communication.
A surprising amount of people here are vegetarian, and our vegetarian options in the pub are extremely popular, sometimes outselling the meat options , but as far as i know, nobody has enquired about vegan dishes.
I could be wrong on this, but i would say italian food is your best bet here, with lots of emphasis on fresh vegetables in their cuisine, certainly more than Ausrian. But im certainly not an experienced voice on the matter, im a sucker for meat
I would be curious as to how you get on though if you could keep us updated that'd be great.

A vegetarian restaurant called Feldberg has recently opened in the 7th district.
www.feldberg.at (the weekly menu is now online, as is the brunch menu). Their opening times are a little unusual at the moment, but that's probably because they're finding their feet. Early days...
Email: reservierung@feldberg.at
The food was tasty when I went there recently, and they have a Sunday brunch which I haven't tried yet but will be trying soon.
For those of you whose German is 'not quite fluent', I believe the staff speak quite good English.
Cheers,
Fran
so nice to meet other vegan people around here. Welcome! :)
Well, the others did post nearly everything ... some days ago, I saw that at bakery Ströck they have some vegan snacks ... the society is slowly changing, I mean now in every supermarket you can buy tofu and stuff.
When my husband (who eats meat) and me go to eat out, we usually go to Loving Hut or to Xu's Cooking which offers lots of Vegan foods ... But to be honest I prefer eating at home because I love cooking.

Hi Smile!
I really want to try the Loving Hut! They don't have a menu on the website. What kind of things do they serve? and what are the prices like?

Hey Sherry,
Their style is a little Asian, but they also serve delicious Austrian and international food such as Wienerschnitzel, "Chicken" Nuggets, Hotdogs or Burger AND vegan cakes. The prices are in my opinion ok, it's not cheap, but the food is really delicious and I think it is worth it. :)
As a vegan living in Vienna, I can share some info....
For all-Austrian cuisine there is a place called Mondscheinstüberl, which calles itself the first vegan Austrian "Wirtshaus" - they have "traditional" foods as a vegan version. I have only been there once and it's been a while. Website www.mondscheinstueberl.at does not seem to be working (at the mo). Ltd space, probably have to book table. Ltd menu - if memory serves: 3 dishes + 1 desert option.
Vegetasia (there are two of those, one was recently renamed Xu's Cooking http://www.vegetasia.at/) are nearly completely vegan. Very few items on the menu have egg in it - and they are marked. They have lunch buffets every day and are open yr round. Asian, lots of faux meats & fried stuff available.
Formosa @ Barnabitengasse has a variety of menus (w/ either soup or salad as starter) and vegan burgers. Also, almost completely vegan, non-vegan stuff clearly marked. They also sell vegan products (everything from faux meats to pet food).
Biobar Antun was mentioned in the forum. Their vegan options are clearly marked, as well. Nice place for warm weather.
Bio Maran (also mentioned above) is an organic supermarket (two I know of, there may be three if I am not mistaken) that also offers some vegan products (soygurts, tofu, spreads, soy/rice/almond milk, baked goods).
You will be able to get the standards like tofu and soy/rice milks in some of the supermarket chains - and, yes, the bigger the store the better your options. Merkur seems to be the one with the largest variety - their stores tend to be big.
Anyway, those are the ones I can vouch for, having tested them all at least once. I'm sure you'll be fine.
Saw a "Vegane Küche" restaurant about half a bus stop from Reumann platz, Favoritenstrasse, direction out of town. No idea of the name or what it"s like but thought of you.
