Hi Guys

My name's Nico. I am a french lad living in Ireland and will be soon (next 3-4 months) relocating to Vienna.

Firstly, thanks for putting up such a great site together. It's not always easy to come across a good web portal which provides you with relevant information for expats.

I've been relocating a number of times across the EU and I know that the same "catch 22" situation always happen at some stage: e.g. you can not get an apartment if you don't have a bank account and you can not get a bank account if you don't have an address...

So I was wondering if you guys had any good tips on how to avoid this? I was thinking of opening an online account in Austria right now but it seems like i can only open an offshore savings account not an actual current account...

Anyway any help appreciated. Thanks again for the site and looking forward to be in Vienna soon!

Cheers

Same here with the bank account. First i asked for info on one of the banks' website (one that has a "Service Centre for Expatriates"), and the answer from the bank was:

Quote:
Documents needed for an account opening are a valid photo ID (preferrably a passport), a proof of Residency (Meldezettel) and if, possible, a copy of the work contract. You can choose a branch which is near your home or workplace to make everything easier, and just go in and ask who would have time. If no one is free you might need to make an appointment for another day.

Next day i went into the central office of that bank, and happened to meet the lady who replied to my email (and who's a native English speaker). The whole account opening took less than 15 minutes.

I received my Maestro card a few days later by the post.

Thanks very much for the info Gabi

Do you know if you can get the Meldezettel if using a temp accomodation like a service apartment?

I am going to rent a service apartment for a month and I was wondering if I could use that address to get the Meldezettel...

Cheers

I rented an apartment for a few months when I first arrived. It was a private, commission free apartment that was perfect until I got bank account set up, got to know Wien and decided where I wanted to stay.

It is free again this year in August for 3 months. Its furnished, right beside the Augarten in the 2nd . Rent was €650-680 month. If you are interested, PM me and I can put you in contact with the girl living there. She travels a few months a year and rents the apt out while she is gone.

Hi Nico!

Usually you can (and in theory MUST - within three days of moving) fill out a Meldezettel, no matter of your type of accommodation. You can print the request yourself, fill it out and just request a signature from the owner (employee of the rental company). The form is available here:
http://www.wien.gv.at/verwaltung/meldeservice/meldezettel.html

In our case, on our first day the rental company has handed us over three pre-filled forms, signed and stamped by them.

You have to take the filled Meldezettel to the Meldeservice: http://www.wien.gv.at/verwaltung/meldeservice/stellen.html They will give you (on the spot) a "Bestätigung der Meldung" - but this is also commonly referred as Meldezettel.

Gabriel
