Well,

After about 6 years in Austria, I accepted another job in the UK. They will be applying for my work visa over there, but I'm wondering if I will have to give up my Austrian residency or somehow trade it in for the UK work visa because if so, then I have to start ALL over again and say things are going so well..I'll be screwed..can't go back to Austria and would have to return home..not a bad thing, but kinda had more doors open with my daueraufenhalt.

Do they actually make you return the visa OR can I keep an address here..pay for health insurance and return every so often? I tried google, but couldn't find anythinng...

Does anyone have a clue?

Steve

hmm..

If I have to, I'll keep my business here and claim (tax) almost nothing and pay for the health insurance, plus keep my apartment and sublet it.. I'm just wondering if the UK will say..ok..here is your UK Visa..now give us your Austrian visa.

I believe all you have to do is return once every 10-12 months..not a big deal when Ryan air is like 50€, plus I still have friends here...I'm single as well..

It's just stupid because my visa allows me to work in all Schengen countries, but UK wants to be different..

BTW..when they asked for your police report (any criminal offences)...did you get it from your home country or the German police?

Uk is not a Schengen country, so there lies your problem. But looks like you figured out a solution.

Well,

I lived here for 6 years..I could get a police report for Canada and Austria, but that's just stupid AGAIN. I can't get a visa in Austria IF I had a criminal record...I'd also be kicked out of Austria IF I got a criminal record here..so WTF..of course I'm clean!

Do you think the UK would request that I return my permit to them or the Austrian authorities or they just won't bother and let me handle that myself?

------------

Atenea...

If you have a work permit..it needs to say Daueraufenthalt - EG which basically is permanent residency...You have to live in Austria for 5 or more years (NOT as a student..)...you get it automatically..THEN you can work in the Schengen region..NOT including UK, IReland, Denmark..as they aren't in Schengen and even though Switzerland is..they don't accept it. You have to apply for a visa there.

Yours might say niederlassungsbewilligung right now..

there are no Schengen countries, they are called Schengen areas..and they consist of 25 European countries. So Silvia is right, the UK is not a schengen country....
