Hi

I would like to hear from someone haveing experience of importing electronics items from USA. A friend will send me an DSLR camera. I would like to know how much tax do i need to pay? Is there any possibility of keeping the taxes at minimum possible level?

Tax varies and depends on the invoice value. I recently paid 70 Euro on a value of $900 (laptop). Normally it should be between 10 and 15 %.

Are you traveling there just for holidays? or are you ordering online?

Might be cheaper just to buy it if you go for a visit. You are allowed up to 500 euro I think to take back. Best is to fly into Germany and take a local flight back. If you fly more international then that you might get checked. Last time I was stopped, but it was probably because I was bringing my guitar over at the same time. I just played stupid and they let me go. I had 2 laptops with me and one I bought when I was in Canada.

I just told them I bought it online 8 months ago..so they just told me to register the reg number whenever I take it with me traveling with customs..

Make sure they fill out the customs form properly. Write "used personal item" for the contents or else you can end up paying the cost for the camera again.

Send the documentation separately by post. Dump the packaging in the USA and put a note in it saying you left this behind.
