More...: Breakfast at leisure: Vienna's Recipe For Night Owls
Topic: Food & Drink

After a long night on the town, there is nothing better than a hearty breakfast. Whether continental, Viennese, French or  Anglo-American - a big breakfast at a nice café or restaurant, plenty of time and good company get the day off to a great start, no matter when it begins. The following places fit the bill perfectly:

Blue Box
7th district, Richtergasse 8. Tue - Fri 10am-2am, Sat & Sun
10am-4am, Mon 6pm-2am.
Tel. +43 (0)1 523 26 82, bluebox@bluebox.at, www.bluebox.at
Relax over breakfast up until 5pm round the block from Mariahilfer Strasse, Vienna's biggest shopping street. Blue Box has been a vogue rendezvous spot for almost 20 years. The breakfast menu is international, and in the summer the garden is the ideal place to start the new day.

Café Stein
9th district, Währinger Strasse 6-8. Mon-Sat 7am-1am,
Sun & public hols 9am-1am.
Tel. +43 (0)1 319 72 41, cafe-stein@cafe-stein.com,
www.cafe-stein.com

Since 1985, the Stein has been one of the best choices for anyone wanting a good breakfast close to the university - and very late (up to 8pm). The café is light-pervaded and has an enormous garden, where on summer mornings you will come across revellers from the night before - most sporting sunglasses.

Blaustern
9th district, Döblinger Gürtel 2. Sun-Thu 9am-1am, Fri & Sat
9am-2am. Tel. +43 (0)1 369 65 64
Breakfast is served all day long here. The accompanying coffee comes from the establishment's own roasting house and is served in pretty cups. This alone is reason enough to pay the Blaustern a visit. What's more, it is also the ideal starting point for a trip to the wine-growing district of Grinzing or Kahlenberg hill.

Steindl
6th district, Stumpergasse 59. Daily 8am - midnight.
Tel. +43 (0)1 596 52 76, restaurant@steindl.co.at
The breakfast menu also features an American breakfast with red beans, bacon and eggs. Located close to Westbahnhof railway station, the Steindl serves breakfast at the weekend until 5pm.

Café Drechsler
6th district, Linke Wienzeile 22. Mon - Fri 3am-8pm,
Sat 3am-6pm. Tel. +43 (0)1 587 85 80
The Drechsler is an old coffee house at Vienna's Naschmarkt market. It opens bright and early at three o'clock and is therefore the perfect place for breakfast before heading off to bed. Definitely worth a try at any time of day are the scrambled eggs, prepared and served in small pans.
