| : The Vienna Art Orchestra, one of Europe’s leading big bands |
| |
The Vienna Art Orchestra, one of Europe’s leading big bands, was
created in Vienna in 1977 by Mathias Rüegg. After a short but
intensively activist beginning, the young sound "phenomenon"
conquered the concert halls of Europe with its audacious postmodern
style, which even touched the extremes of avant-garde and
idiosyncratic Viennese Schmäh, as for example in the early
recordings Tango from Obango, From No Time to Rag Time and The
Minimalism of Erik Satie.

What was, what is the role of Jewish Theater in Austria? From 1900 to
1938, Vienna had a small but extremely active Jewish theater scene
that brought cabaret, musical theater, operettas, short works, and
full-length dramas to the stage in Yiddish, Hebrew, and German.
Yiddish ensembles such as the Jüdische Bühne, which existed
from 1908 to 1938, and the ambitious Jüdische Künstlerspiele
brought together actors from all over Eastern Europe performing
mainly operettas, melodramas, and Yiddish revues in which not only
song and dance, but also the problems of the day played an important role.

The style known today as Biedermeier was popular in the early 19th
century throughout most of Northern Europe, particularly in Germany,
Austria, Czechoslovakia, Hungary, as well as Scandinavia and the
Baltic States. Officially, Biedermeier was only produced between 1810
and 1835. Revival periods include 1860, late 19th Century and again
in the 1920s. Most of the furniture from that era remain anonymous
and dateless, in character with the modest craftsmen who created the
style. But the impact of its unfussy style and clean lines is still
felt today.
