Television in Vienna - What are the options?

When I first moved to Austria, there was one thing I just couldn't leave behind - good old British telly. I always hated synchronised television and I am loathed to watch anything dubbed into German, even though I am told it can seriously improve your language skills! Before I first arrived I was checking on what I could and couldn't receive when I eventually settled in Austria, was it even technially possible? How hard would it be to set up when I know nothing about installing a satellite dish and a box. Read More

Televison

There are currently 3 main television and video standards used throughout the world. In Austria the standard is PAL - Phase Alternating Line. A Pal Format television and video allows viewing and taping of the standard PAL format. A Mufti-system TV and VCR will accommodate  NTSC(U.S. made)  tapes and the PAL format. Both systems allow for hook up to satellite or cable.

Your Other Options Are:

UPC Telekabel   (website in German only)
Gudrunstrasswe 161 • 1100 Wien
TeL: 01/960 60-600

Cable: 34 Stations mostly in German, but also offers channels in Italian (1), French(1), Turkish(1),  BBC Prime (English)CNN (English) CNBC(mostly in English).  Also the cable channel TW1 offers some English programing like Hello Austria - Hello Vienna.

Or Satellite:

A south-facing building and permission from your landlord seem to be the first requirements for this technology. Some apartment buildings and houses are equipped with a common satellite dish serving all occupants, and the installation of a private dish requires the consent of all other co-owners living in the building. nce you have crossed these hurdles, you should be able to subscribe to all the English-language stations available in Europe.
