Health in Vienna

doctorsThe City of Vienna is a participant in the WHO "Healthy Cities" project. An endeavor to promote health awareness among the population and to improve conditions through information and action. On the basis of what we know about the health of the population through research and studies, the City of Vienna is striving to improve the health of its citizens.

Vienna ´s new concept of health reporting relates to the WHO definition that health is state of total physical, mental, psychological and social wellbeing. According to this definition, health reports are no longer mere illness reports, but also consider factors like socio-economy, unemployment and job security, stress, social exclusion, nutrition, the environment and the available space for recreation. Health Insurance Coverage

In general, only persons employed in Austria are covered by public health insurance. Persons receiving a pension from the Austrian Social Security Administration and who are residing in Austria are also covered by public health insurance. After establishing residence in Austria, a small portion of the pension is withheld for this purpose. Special regulations apply to self-employed persons. Persons not covered by health insurance can obtain coverage from private health insurance companies in Austria.

The statutory social security system provides mandatory health, accident, retirement and, for employed persons only, unemployment insurance.

The costs of the Social Security System is split between employer and employee and will be deducted monthly from your salary.

In Austria, everybody is free to choose his/her own doctor.

Private doctors charge a fee for consultation. Part of the amount will be reimbursed by the Austrian medical insurance. Read More

Pharmacies  (Apotheken)

In Austria most drugs are not available over-the-counter and you must have a prescription for your doctor to obtain them. Non-prescription drugs like (e.g. Aspirin, Ibuprofen, cough syrup) are only available in a pharmacy, not drugstore (Drogerien).

Pharmacies are open:
Monday - Friday: 8:00 A.M. - Noon,  2 P.M - 6 P.M
Saturdays 8:00: A.M. - Noon

Pharmacies rotate lunch time and the hours outside of the normal business ones. (There are always locations open throughout the city 24/7) a list of the nearest open pharmacy is posted outside of each pharmacy. You will have to ring or knock and the door of the designated pharmacy and someone will serve you through a window in the door. There is an extra charge for medicines purchased after hours.
