7 great international pubs in Vienna to visit

best pubs in vienna

Whether you are visiting Vienna for a few days or you are an expat based in Vienna, when you’re looking for a familiar taste of beer and English speaking company, Vienna has quite a few great international pubs to choose from. While you will meet heaps of Austrians and tourists from all over the world, staff will most likely be native speakers and popular events like pub quizzes and live sports are common options for an evening’s entertainment.

#1 Crossfield – Maysedergasse 5, 1010 Vienna

This Australian themed pub, situated in the heart of Vienna’s inner city, has been around for quite a while and caters to an international crowd with a wide selection of beers and Australian dishes to choose from. If you’re looking for someone to hand you a Vegemite sandwich, this place probably is your best bet in Vienna. All sorts of sporting events are shown throughout the week and can be viewed on TV sets throughout the bar. www.crossfield.at

#2 Charlie P’s – Währinger Straße 3, 1090 Vienna

A popular location with students due to its proximity to the university, Charlie P’s is a good spot to meet a diverse, international crowd. You’ll usually find specials throughout the week and football and other live sporting events being shown. There’s a broad selection of international and craft beers available and at the accompanying dining room, you’ll be able to enjoy a nice gourmet dinner before hitting the pub area downstairs for a night of partying. www.charlieps.at

#3 Kolar – Kleeblattgasse 5, 1010 Vienna

This pub’s specialty are its filled pita breads and self-brewed beer, which earned it quite a reputation with locals as well as with visitors. It usually draws an international crowd with people of all ages and backgrounds coming together to enjoy a relaxed night out. There are special nights and themed events available, but the place is usually filled pretty much any time of the week, so make sure to phone ahead if you plan on going with a larger group.  www.kolar-beisl.at

#4 Chelsea – Lerchenfeldergürtel U-Bahnbögen 29-32, 1080 Vienna

Perhaps Vienna’s most popular location for watching Champion’s League and Premier League matches, this pub located right below the U6 subway (which goes above ground for quite a bit on its way), is a great location if you are into Indie Rock and enjoy an alternative crowd. With live concerts, theme parties and sporting events, there’s enough to do to stick around several days during a week. It’s definitely a good place to meet people and have a few cold ones, but you better stop for food on the way there if you’re hungry. www.chelsea.co.at

#5 1516 – Schwarzenbergstraße 2, 1010 Vienna

This pub in Vienna’s inner city has made a name for itself with its own brews and great food. You’ll usually find it packed with people during most days of the week, as it is incredibly easy to just stumble into and hang out there for a while. The crowd is a good mix of nationalities coming together and, especially during the summer months, you’ll meet many tourists from all over the world. It might be worth calling in for a reservation a day or two ahead if you plan to come with a group of people. www.1516brewingcompany.com

#6 Känguruh Bierbeisl – Bürgerspitalgasse 20, 1060 Vienna

Situated near Vienna’s prime shopping area (Mariahilfer Straße), this pub or “beisl”, as the locals call their pubs and bars, has an impressive selection of international beers to choose from. However specific your taste in beer may be, this place probably gives you the best chance of finding it throughout the city. Combine that with a nice relaxed atmosphere and beer aficionados from various parts of the world to talk to, and you’re sure to enjoy a nice evening out.

#7 Johnny’s Pub – Schleifmühlgasse 11, 1040 Vienna

If you’re looking for a drink after a long day at work or walking around the city, this pub offers an amazing happy hour, where you can get half priced beer and wine and all within walking distance from Karlsplatz subway station. The staff is entirely international – of the English speaking persuasion – and the pub’s layout makes it easy to interact with the other patrons and meet new people. It’s also worth checking their weekly specials of food and craft beer and their intimidating burgers.
