I’m looking into relocating to Graz (preferably the surrounding areas). After months if not longer, of searching for apartments or small houses to rent, its becoming near to impossible to find real estate which doesnt state “keine haustiere” (no house pets). I’m not looking at furnished ones either, and still it seems to be impossible.

Has anyone ever come across this hurdle, as it never was this bad?! It now seems to be a really big thing. I do appreciate that there may be people out there that let their house pets do whatever they want in an apartment and cause damage, but this isnt the case for everyone, but try explaining this to the potential landlord. And no doubt there are plenty of renters that damage apartments as well, but animals seem to be a tad discriminated. Its also quite common in other countries that house pets are not desirable in rented apartments/flats, so I’m not just putting this down to Austria, but its where i live and have done for many years, so I have to deal with the situation here.

I’ve looked at literally hundreds of ads on willhaben and many other sites, but the drawback is always the same, no house pets. Many dont state this, so after a gazillion calls to potential apartment owners, the mention of house pets just puts an end to it. What do people do when they have pets and want/need to move into a new place? Getting “rid” of my dogs is obviously not a solution. Was just wondering if anyone else has come across this and how/if they managed to find a place?

I don’t know if that helps, but it sure sounds like cats and dogs should now be allowed most of the time …

I totally agree with you and it really makes me mad…really mad. I have a well trained little dog, and people make such a big deal out of it…but of course kids are not a problem even though the damage kids do is far worse than anything a pet can do…so explain it to me…I don’t get it either. I have been a landlord in my life, and I always take pets, it’s the humans who make the damage! ha ha, I guess I’m not being politically correct, but I hope you find a nice place. I don’t know anything about Graz, sorry. I also wanted to say that if it comes down to it, I suggest to not even mention your dog. Get the apartment, sign a contract, and f**k ’em. Once you are in, not much they can do. The laws are on the side of the renters….Oops! have I been a bad girl?? Just saying..
