Could someone please enlighten me on what are the rules on freelancing as a fitness instructor? I am planning to get a qualification as a Zumba instructor, am a resident in Austria (spouse of UN employee). I can’t speak German but I want to have some source of income with flexible timings to balance home and work schedules. Appreciate your help and thank you very much.
July 15, 2012 at 3:01 pm #2056blueorangeMemberyou should check with WKO if you need to get a license, but I don’t think you need one. Another possibility is to go to some gym and ask what qualifications. wko.at
Other factors, like language and citizenship, don’t matter for becoming an instructor.
July 15, 2012 at 3:08 pm #2057SilviaMemberThere is a license for this, but it does not mean everyone is following the law and they rarely follow up on small ventures, as long as tax is being paid if due.
The license comes under (freien Unternehmenstätigkeiten) this means there is no particular field of study to qualify, but this changing fast for this field. Be careful if you are teaching classes on your own, because you may have to have liability insurance in case someone gets hurt.
These publication might be helpful.

Yeah I know you don’t like the expat centre (something to do with chairs IIRC) but you might at least have the good grace to acknowledge the possibility that they might be able to help this person. They speak English for a start, the OP says she can’t speak German and I bet the WKÖ isn’t going to help her in English.

The Expat center is a great starting point for anyone. I think most of us that came years ago would have been very happy to have had them. I have heard nothing but good about them and I think no matter where they send you they are a great starting point to familiarize you with what you will need and what to expect.
The WKO is also excellent, however from personal experience they are there to bring business into Austria and think along that line. Small ventures and self employed people can wind up with businesses licenses and costs that really may not always be needed. For instance working for someone and teaching your own classes all have fine lines and if you are not aware of the, it could cost you more money than a part – time venture is worth.

so what? (is wrong with that??) 👿
who said something is wrong? You said it, I didn’t it.
But they WILL send her to WKO, so she might go there directly: Schwarzenbergplatz 14; Wippplingerstrasse 8 – were very helpful for me.
They DO speak English – not all the people but the key professionals do.Listen, Expat Center is funded by EU and City of Vienna, so a lot of taxes and fees we pay are going for keeping up that super-posh location, furniture and employees who are each siting in wonderful huge offices and are not experts in licensing, in company formation or funding. They are just an information hub, which can be at least a little less extravagant. Especially during austerity measures. All our taxes increased, fees, fines, sales taxes for property, should I go on – everything is squeazing the income from residents. And that exuberance is just wrong.
It created more workplaces… for austrians. sorry, but there are almost no expats working in it. There are just a couple in mingo, but i don’t remember anyone in expat center.
July 22, 2012 at 8:39 am #2075blueorangeMemberOf course if they advertise on this site, they will be supported. Also nothing wrong with it – just business. But everyone is entitled to their own view. I am not imposing on anyone else’s – but this is how I see them.
Plus i really stopped caring about expat center and even forgot about them, I am just replying. But really who cares anymore – go and try it for yourself. If it works for you – great, it didn’t for me. WKO did work very well, however, that’s why I posted.
So I guess, I really don’t care about Expat center :))

If they are advertisers it is a surprise to both of us!
