I just sent my passport oday to the embassy to be renewed and it needs a month to process. I am planning to travel to berlin next week by train. I only get a ‘Bestätigung’ (confirmation letter) from the embassy here stating that my passport is being renewed and the letter serves as my ID at the moment. And the embassy officer told me that it shouldnt be a problem as i am traveling to another Schengen city. I just need to show my Residence Permit and the letter from the embassy should the authority ask for it. Any opinion?

do you mean Austrian residence permit card, austrian driving license & the bestätigung from embassy dont count?
p/s am travelling with hubby (austrian), and someone suggested that i bring the marriage certificate as well.
September 12, 2012 at 1:11 pm #2227mikeviennaMemberif you are travelling by air an Austrian drivers license is not accepted by every EU country as a valid form of ID.
September 13, 2012 at 7:25 am #2228MikeSierraMemberYou would need a travel document (passport or personal ID e.g Austrian or German Personalausweis) which is valid for international travel. “Bestaetigung”, residence permit or drivers license does not suffice. Hope this helps, Mike
September 14, 2012 at 7:36 am #2229LuvwinesMemberI went to Munich once with just my driver’s license thinking that because I am an EU citizen traveling in the EU that I wouldn’t need my passport. They had just banned smoking in Germany and when I got off the train I lit up a cigarette not realising it is forbidden in the station. Well the cops immediately stopped and searched me and gave me a lecture for not having my passport, but in the end they let me go with a warning. Mind you I wouldn’t try this if you aren’t your typical caucasian anglo saxon.
