Hello everybody!
I’m Paola from Italy. I have a 4 years old child and we are going to move to Vienna next June.
We have to choose a Kindergarten for our son and it’s non easy. We will choose an English speaking Kindergarten.
Could you please give me your opinions about these schools?UNITED CHILDREN (2nd/6th districts)
DANUBE INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL (2nd district)
INTERNATIONAL PRIVATE CHILDREN’S HOUSE (7th district)
INTERNATIONAL MONTESSORI PRESCHOOL (3rd district)Thanks very very much for your help!

The Vienna English Preschool is not in my list because it’s in the 22nd district (isn’t it?) and I believe we will live in the 4th one, but I don’t know yet. Did you live near yhe school or is it possible to live also in another district and reach the school easily everyday in your opinion? Thanks again,
PaolaApril 29, 2011 at 9:12 pm #1901CherriesJubileeMemberOverall, I consider Vienna to be a small city. We live in the 3rd and it takes us about 20-25 mintues to get to that area by the school. If we lived in the US I am sure we would be driving for at least that long. We liked the school so much that it made the commute not a problem. There is also a great Vienna Bilingual school directly across the street for when your kid “graduates” from kindergarten.

Exactly what I was about to say! You need to register your child when you are pregnant these days and then it isn’t 100% certain that you will get a place.

I think we are lucky because The Montessori Preschool (Ungargasse, 3rd District) and the United Children (Nestroyplatz, 2nd District) have a place for our child.
My husband prefers to have the kindergarten near where we will live in order to meet other children not only at school, but also to the park or for the afternoon activities (for example, sport).
We will visit these kindergarten and also the Danube School, next week.
I don’t know yet, if the Danube school have a place for my son.
I hope to do the right choice!
Thanks again and have a nice sunday!
PaolaMay 1, 2011 at 6:56 am #1906ElaineMemberI visited the Montessori school a few weeks ago in their new locations. It is a really nice school – very competent instruction. If you are considering Montessori, it would be a good idea to read more about it in depth – I would suggest “How to raise an amazing child” by Tim Seldin (available from Amazon.com or .de). Some parents find out (usually after their children have already started kindergarten) that the philosophy of Montessori is not in line with their child-rearing philosophy or practices. This can create conflict and confusion for the children. I am a Montessori teacher at The Children’s House in the 22nd and I have seen this happen year after year! Montessori works best when children begin at the age of 2.5 to 3 years of age, depending on the child. There is a great deal of emphasis on developing independence – so if you are a parent who likes to do everything for your child, Montessori will probably not be your cup of tea! We have a saying that Montessori is good for every child, but not for every parent!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SyFU8tBN9kIIf you do decide on the Montessori approach, there are about 8 videos in this series & I think they do a pretty good job of explaining what goes on in a Montessori school.
May 10, 2011 at 12:51 pm #1908PaolaDMMemberDear Elaine,
thank you very much for the link to the videos.
They are very useful for me and my husband to better understand the “Montessori” school and we are not so sure that it would be the right choice for our son.
In these days my husband is in Vienna and he is going to visit also one of the “Kindercompany” Kindergarten.
Do you know “Kindercompany”?
Thank you,

PaolaMay 20, 2011 at 5:54 pm #1911leighbazMemberhi there
I am in the process of looking for a kindergarten for my son and wanted to get some input. We live in the 3rd district and alot of the kindergartens are full for September. I have looked at a Montessori that is opening a nursery in September for 2- 3.5 year olds. Does anyone have any experience with the Children’s Academy in the 3rd district?
Also, does anyone have any experience with The Kindercompany on Invalidenstrasse?
I really like the Montessori philosophy from the basics I know about it…but if anyone had any info on this particular kindergarten/nursery that would be very helpful.
Thanks!January 29, 2012 at 11:21 am #2024GreekaMemberhello everyone !
We will be moving to Vienna in July and will have missed the registration in March for the public schools ( mostly interested in the VBS ) .
Is it at all possible that my child will be denied entrance to the 1rst grade elementary if we register in July ?
I understand that we can not register for school , if we haven’t registered ourselves in Vienna . Is it possible to come to Vienna in March , register ourselves & also register the kids in school even if we are not living there yet ??? Hmmmm…. sticky situation for us ….Please help ….. any feedback would be extremely valuable !
