Appreciated all answers to my predicament! Let’s stay on subject of ‘falling in love with the German language’ and be optimistic! Have a fabulous week-end, everyone!

If you find a comedian or a writer (kishon?) that you like and makes you laugh.. every language has some specific way of expressing things and good humor really bring those things to attention. I live in the US now (but am austrian) and still think fondly of josef hader’s routine from 12+ years ago…

February 17, 2010 at 7:36 am #1795forestMemberI thought of another way of “enjoying” learning German yesterday. If you have itunes you could download some audio books (Hörbücher), some are free and others really dont cost that much. And that would be a great way to make it more fun, rather than always sitting down and studying it. The brain will pick up things without you even noticing it.
February 17, 2010 at 7:56 am #1796kavinMemberFirst in German http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P3ET1b0ymZs
then in English http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f_ptqXqjsZw
yu can try the Czech or other versions too – g8 singer, multi-cult & multi-lingua types!
February 17, 2010 at 7:58 am #1797SilviaMemberI also like the music path. And the Audio books are a great idea.
STS is my favorite. But not Hoch deutsch 😀

Do you ever, in your day-to-day go-abouts, hear little children speaking German? Out of their mouths, it’s a really lovely sound. They have a pretty, song-like lilt to their words, and it makes the language sound truly pleasurable.
I disagree. But each to his own.
French always sounds the most beautiful language to me.
August 28, 2012 at 1:01 pm #2181jnoParticipantI think Austria is not the place to learn German (and I am sorry if that upsets the locals). Deal with Austrian handymen with their alterntaive names for everything, sauf-kultur and so on, this makes it hard for me to love Austrian German.
That said, there are quirky enjoyable things that I find from Austrian German but the dialects around Austria make it almost impossible to sound like one of the locals, if you wanted to fit in. I find it nice to go to Germany now and again, and here some German that is so clearly spoken and “more like it said in the textbook” – that said, it sounds out of place in this neck of the woods.
For me German is great for work, but am I in love with it or in love with learning it? No way! I could never love a phrase such as “Koun ma wos hüfen?” as an Austrian phrase for shop assistants saying “Can I help you with something?” Dear oh dear – it’s just poor and doesn’t sound friendly or cheerful in any way for me.
It really depends on circumstance though, people come here for different reasons and to talk about this amongst foreigners is always going to spark some debate!
August 28, 2012 at 11:57 pm #2183blueorangeMemberjno, i hear you!
I love German for 2-3 months and then I need a long time without it to love it again some time in the future. We have an on and off type of relationships. :))August 29, 2012 at 7:41 pm #2184blueorangeMemberI also agree with lou lou 🙂 Children’s speaking German never did it for me,
